Tonight I read a quote from Mark Twain that said “The key to success is to make your vocation your vacation.” After reading that I was amazed at how much it resonated with me and how true it was, especially in today’s day and age. I think Mr. Twain was on to something because he was actually preaching the “do what you love, love what you do” mantra before all the so-called social media gurus of today. With the advancements in technology and the elimination of the “gatekeepers” in business, the game has changed. Folks are able to build businesses around what they’re passionate about and share that with the world with the click of a button… and THAT is a powerful thing!
I’m not saying you should run out and quit your job tomorrow (seriously, don’t). But I am saying that it’s time to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself if what you’re doing for a living truly makes you happy and gives you a sense of fulfillment. If the answer is no, then I thin now is the time to do something about it! Whether you start a blog, build a piece of software, or start a weekly podcast, there are ways to build an audience and gain traction in the world without leaving the comfort of your home. Using tools like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube you have the ability to be anything you want to be. That last line might have come off a little “after school special’ish” but it’s really true.
I believe that true success is measured by your happiness and well-being. If you love what you do and it pays your bills, you’re doing just fine. However, I don’t care if you make $50K or $50M… If you’re not loving what you do every second of every day, you’re not truly successful. There are a ton of rich people in the world that are miserable, and there are a ton of poor people in the world that are happy as clams. The difference isn’t the money, but the attitude and sense of fulfillment that they have as a result of what they do. Remember, it’s never too late and you can ALWAYS change for the better. Don’t ever go backwards and don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t!
