Believing You Can’t, Means You Won’t…

Throughout this past year I’ve overcome some serious obstacles in my life, both personally and professionally. I’ve conquered more demons in the last 12 months than most people tackle in an entire lifetime. My journey this past year has brought me to a realization about what makes me different from other people. I’m not the type of person that enjoys hearing the word no… In fact, I hate it. Every time someone has told me that I couldn’t do something or that something was out of my reach, it has pushed me that much harder to do, whatever it was, that much more. I realize though that most people hear the phrase no, or “you can’t” and simply accept it as fact… The question is, why?

When I first started producing podcasts and video tutorials from my living room nearly 7 years ago, I was told by many that it was a waste of time and that I didn’t really have the talent to turn it into anything. At the time my Western KY accent was too strong, my delivery was off and my video production skills were minimal at best. Hearing criticisms like this did nothing but motivate me to make myself better. Within two years I had one of the most popular podcasts on the iTunes store and over 1 million downloads per month. How’s that for a podunk kid from KY? These days I’m working for one of the biggest online training companies in the world and I’ve made a full-blown career off doing online video training… All because I never gave up and I never listened when someone told me that I couldn’t do something!

No matter what your goal is in life or business, you CAN achieve it. Sure, it may take you months or even years to get there, but dammit you CAN get there. Why would you let anyone tell you different? The only reason people tell you that you can’t do something is because somewhere inside themselves they’ve become complacent and are fine to ride the rails of mediocrity forever. You don’t have to ride that train though. Complacency is the key ingredient in failure, so by constantly striving for something better and never losing sight of your true goals, you ensure that failure never enters the equation.

Throughout my life I’ve been “down and out” more than once. In fact, I’ve been in some dark places where I couldn’t really see any light at the end of the tunnel… But no matter what I always got up, dusted myself off, and went right back to work! This type of determination has allowed me to achieve so many goals in both my career and my personal life. So, what’s the secret? Well, for me, I found that I needed to both add and subtract a few things from my life to get myself back on track.

First off, I chose to remove negativity from my life entirely. I simply don’t associate with those who constantly put down my ambitions or accomplishments. You know who these people are… They’re the ones that can’t have a conversation without taking a turn to negative town. Just tell these folks to get lost!

In addition to removing negativity, you have to add support and positivity. I’ve become much closer with the people who’ve always “had my back” in the past, and I also married the most supportive and wonderful woman on the planet! If you don’t surround yourself with positive energy you’ll never be ever to cultivate the creative energy you need to push through your barriers and succeed!

The final piece of  puzzle is accountability. You must make yourself accountable for the goals in your life. Set milestones and ambitious targets for yourself. Hitting those milestones (in any timeframe) will give you a sense of accomplishment and push you to go harder and faster the next time. When I first began my quest for health and wellness, I set goals for myself, and so far I’ve met each one of them! I never really gave myself a timetable in which to accomplish the goals, but it was always a target I had in my head and pushed myself towards. Reaching milestones gives you an amazing feeling, and once you’ve reached one you’ll want to reach another. It’s an addiction.

Remember, if you believe you can’t do something, then you won’t do something… It’s that simple! I’ve been through it and I know it’s though, but if you slow down and take it one step at a time, the journey doesn’t seem near as long or rigorous. Life and business are measured in miles, not inches, so pushing yourself consistently over the long haul will be much more beneficial than trying to sprint right out of the gate.

  3. What a fantastic post, thank you – I needed this right now. You’re so right. I’m taking baby steps right now towards the goals I’ve ALWAYS wanted to / knew I could do but put off because I thought “I can’t do it *yet*”. What a waste of time! My other demon is “It’s too late now” – when those two bad boys get together, it’s a losing battle!

    I CAN do this, and it’s NEVER too late!

    And I too have dumped the negative people in my life. They are nothing more than energy vampires!! Positive supportive folks can make a world of difference. I am so very grateful for them.
