There will come a time in your life/career where you find yourself questioning every decision you’ve ever made and wanting to quit. Don’t. If I had quit every time life dealt me a shitty hand, I’d never be where I am today. I have mastered the art of getting knocked down and getting back up again, and you can do the same. Persistence pays off, and success is a side effect of never giving up.
When the economy went into the tank in 2007/2008, I found myself in a serious predicament. I was out off work, relatively unknown (despite the success of my podcast), and struggling to find anything meaningful on the horizon. I took the first job that came along, a teaching position at a small computer training center in Louisiana, and wound up meeting the woman that I would spend the rest of my life with. There were some dark days in between there, sure, but I never gave up. I knew if I kept my head down, stayed focused, and worked hard, good things would happen… and they did!
Every time I’ve found myself down & out, I’ve always managed to find a way to pick myself up and dust myself off again. I’ve lost jobs, quit jobs, and moved all over this country more times than I can count, but each time I became stronger, and even more focused on achieving my dreams. It’s not easy, and you’ll be tempted to quit many times along the way. At the end of the day, just remember that you, and you alone, are in charge of your destiny. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Just smile, nod, and relish the fact that you’ll eventually prove them wrong.
There were people who told me I’d never amount to much. They said I was destined to work a job at Wal-Mart for the rest of my life and never leave the confines of my parents house. Those same people also told me that I’d die before the age of 30 because I was morbidly obese. Yet here I sit, working for an amazing company, living in Southern California, enjoying my new life as a sub 200lbs individual who actively participates in 5ks and half marathons.
If you’re reading this, thinking to yourself “damn, I wish I could do that”… You can! Honestly, what I’ve done isn’t anything magical, nor is it that difficult if you put your mind to it. The formula is quite simple, really. Choose a goal, set a timeline, and work as hard as you can to get there. Along the way, take note of the haters, naysayers, and those who put you down. Use whatever it is they say to motivate yourself to be better each and every single day. Take pride in showing them that they can’t break your spirit. Don’t even dignify their comments with a response, though, just let your success turn their words into a big ol’ glass of shut up juce. Then just sit back and relax as they drink down every last ounce of it.
I truly believe that anyone can accomplish any goal that they set. The only thing standing in your way is you. The rest is all just noise and nonsense. Do your best today to make yourself better tomorrow. If you do that, you win, plain and simple. What goals are you fighting to achieve? What are your strategies for coping with failure and negativity? Sound off in the comments or shoot me a message via Facebook or Twitter. Thanks for reading!
