Never Underestimate the Power of the Hustle

When people ask me how I got where I am today or how I lost all the weight that I shed over the last couple of years, my response is always the same… Hustle. I busted my ass to get where I am today. The journey was long and not without hardship, but I wouldn’t change a single but of it, because it made me stronger and better for it in the long run.

“Things may come to those who wait, but only those things left by those who hustle.” – Abraham Lincoln

The above quote, originally attributed to Lincoln, is one of my favorite quotes of all time. The words ring true to almost all aspects of life. I realized this early on, and set my goals high for what I wanted to achieve. I saw others doing what I wanted to do. I saw that there was an opportunity to get in on it, and I worked my face off to break into the business.

That’s what it takes, working your face off. Others won’t understand why you’re doing it, and you’ll almost certainly be chastised for putting forth so much effort for (seemingly) little return on your investment. Most people made fun of me when I started my podcast back in 2006. They didn’t get it, and thought I was wasting my time because there were so many “big shots” already doing it. Well, nowadays, I work with the big shot in lynda.com, and I got here because I worked for it.

Whether you’re an aspiring photographer, designer, or you want to sell mittens that you made on Etsy, the formula is the same. There’s no substitute for hard work and determination. You should wake up every day and think about what you can do to move you one step closer to your ultimate goal. Each step will be harder than the next, but it’s not about the journey, it’s about the destination. One day when you’re sitting on top of the mountain, smiling down on those who were too lazy or too scared to take that first step, you’ll know that it was all worth it.

Never underestimate the power of the hustle. Sure, skills and creativity will do wonders for you, but they can only take you so far. Hustling is what takes you over the top and carries you across the finish line. Never forget that.
